When blood pools up in a vein, it appears larger and becomes visible as a red, blue, or purple vein underneath the skin. These veins are known as spider veins.
Spider veins get their name because of how they resemble a spider web. They affect more than 40 million people in the United States and can lead to embarrassment and self-consciousness. Spider veins can be caused by a number of factors, including sudden hormone changes, weight gain, and pregnancy.
The appearance of spider veins on the face and legs can be very discouraging for some people. This is why a number of people opt to treat spider veins using laser technology.
How Is Laser Technology Used to Treat Spider Veins?
The most common form of laser used in the treatment of spider veins is the Nd:YAG laser. The Nd:YAG laser is a long-pulse laser that has proven to be more effective in treating spider veins than any other type of laser so far. The procedure is quite simple and is only minimally invasive. It is performed in our office and takes less than an hour or so.
The Nd:YAG laser is administered with the help of a handheld device. This device also has a cooling tip attached in order to cool and protect the skin while the laser is being applied.
During the procedure, a very narrow and focused beam of laser energy is directed at the area to be treated. The beam is focused so that it does not affect any of the surrounding cells or vessels. The heat generated by the laser penetrates the skin and reaches the affected vein.
As a result of this heat, the vein closes up. Over the course of the next few weeks, the vein and the blood are assimilated by the immune system, leaving clear skin.
How Should I Prepare for the Treatment?
Since laser treatment is a minimally invasive procedure, there is not much in the way of preparation. However, on the day of treatment, make sure that you do not apply any creams, moisturizers, or other cosmetic products on the area to be treated.
Further, refrain from taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as they are blood thinners and may cause complications as a result.
What Should I Expect After the Procedure?
After laser treatment, you will need to avoid sun exposure for a couple of days. Slight swelling and redness in the treatment area is normal and will be only temporary. You can return to your normal routine within a couple of days after the procedure.
The results of the treatment take time and are completely visible a couple of weeks after the procedure. The results are long-lasting, though you may need follow-up sessions in the future.
